A bored student at a certain university in the Western Hemisphere in the late 90's, possibly while under the influence, began doodling a crudely drawn talking hammer in class. Although he could not draw (the student, not the hammer), the school's paper had very low standards and would publish absolutely anything. The Hammer subsequently developed a rabid following, easily becoming one of the 40 most popular comic strips in said paper.

Speaking in a 1998 interview, Pierre Berton opined, "The Hammer has become a Canadian cultural institution as well as a veritable whirlwind and phenomenon. Yes indeed, it sure has."

Mr. Berton was paid to say this. "A couple of year back, this bored student had grown into a bored Canadian office worker with vague comedic ambitions. Encouraged by his office colleagues, who politely laughed at each of his unfunny jokes, he pitched his techie friend on the idea of a web site devoted to Canadian humour and satirization (yes, I know it's not a word, so piss off) of all things Canadian and several things not Canadian, with the star of the site being Canada's favourite tool, (no, not Stockwell Day) the Hammer."

The conversation went something like this between the two: "I got the front end. Will you supply me with your back end?" Happily for all involved, the answer was yes.

Together, these two dorks have laboured for many an hour to bring you what they hope will become Canada's premier rip-off of other previously developed online satirical journals.
